Q: What’s the difference between Xiaomi’s custom forged wheels and the mass-produced ones?
A: Xiaomi’s customization service introduces newly designed 4-color forged wheels (Amber Gold, Moon Rock Silver, Mirror Silver, Carbon Black) with more complex milling processes—nearly triple the machining time compared to previous models. To achieve a more three-dimensional, perforated, and slender design, we used over 20 different cutter heads and spent 11 hours sculpting:
First, height differences between wheel spokes were created to enhance dimensionality.
Second, 10 elongated perforated windows were designed to make the spokes appear sharper and more slender, further boosting the 3D effect. However, due to the deep and narrow cuts, only slender tools could be used for precision milling, which alone took 5.7 hours—nearly half the total machining time.
Finally, special ball-end tools (called “lollipop cutters”) were used to carve 10 concave indentations on the spoke sides, creating an ultra-thin appearance.
Additionally, Xiaomi’s forged wheels are made from aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, offering superior mechanical performance, resulting in even slimmer spokes, more intricate perforations, and sharper surface cuts.
